INTRODUCTION

The ascent to Cerro Madsen, in the area of the Fitz Roy range, represents an ideal challenge for beginners in the mountains, or those who want to make their first summit in Patagonia with a stunning view.

ATTRACTIONS

Go off-the-beaten-track and off-trail along a route that is not well known

Stand on the summit of Cerro Madsen for a panoramic view of the entire Fitz Roy mountain range

ITINERARY

We leave El Chaltén by car and follow the Río de las Vueltas to our starting point 17km away. From there,

we hike along a beautiful trail through the lenga forest, following the Río Blanco (White River) towards the

Poincenot campsite. Along the way, we will stop to learn a little about the flora and fauna that is

characteristic of the Patagonian Andean forest and also visit the beautiful Piedras Blancas (White Rocks)

viewpoint. Here we will see the Piedras Blancas glacier and its associated glacial features, including the erratic boulders and lateral moraines left behind as the glacier retreated over the last few decades.

We continue along the trail towards the spectacular Laguna de los Tres, we will head off to our right up the moraine towards the summit of Cerro Madsen. It is a moderate slope through rocky terrain and, depending on the time of year, may require us to use crampons, helmet and harness to traverse snowy or icy areas. The last few meters to the summit are a short climb of low difficulty (fourth degree) and, upon reaching the summit, we will have one of the best panoramic views of the entire Fitz Roy mountain chain.

We descend via the same route to the Poincenot campsite and continue down the trail back to El Chaltén.
