INTRODUCTION
Reach out and touch the soaring granite walls of Cerro Fitz Roy on this challenging program in the high mountains of El Chaltén. It features significant ascents and descents over rocky, snowy and icy terrain that is slightly technical in nature and requires the use of ropes in several places.
Sleep in the base camp used by the adventurers that climb these immense rock faces on this introductory mountaineering trip that also takes in one of the key highlights of this region – the Laguna de los Tres.
ATTRACTIONS
• Stand right at the base of Cerro Fitz Roy to fully appreciate the scale of its immense vertical granite walls
• Experience introductory mountaineering as you tackle low-difficulty rock climbs and traverse the snow and ice of a glacier
• Enjoy an exceptional view over the valleys surrounding El Chaltén from an imposing mountain environment
ITINERARY
From El Chaltén, we begin our journey by driving ~40 minutes to the bridge over the Río Eléctrico (Electric Valley). Our hike is initially quite flat and weaves along a trail through the gorgeous trees as it follows the river through the forest of the Río Eléctrico valley. We will stop for a brief rest at the Piedra del Fraile campsite before starting our ascent of the steep slope leading up to Piedra Negra, the base camp of the Guillaumet mountain. This is our campsite for the night with an impressive view of the glacier and the Paso del Cuadrado on one side, and the Guillaumet pass in front of us.

We wake up very early to take advantage of morning ice and snow conditions. Zig-zagging up a rock slope we will encounter some simple climbing sections to reach the Guillaumet Pass, where we will enter into a completely different world. Ahead of us lies snow and the Piedras Blancas glacier. Roped together we will continue our journey along the base of Cerro Guillaumet, the Mermoz Needles and the gigantic Cerro Fitz Roy. If the weather is good, we will visit the base of Fitz Roy before setting up camp in a snow cave at Paso Superior. This is the same base camp used by the mountaineers who climb Fitz Roy and its neighbouring spires.

We have a relaxed start to our last day so that we can enjoy breakfast and the incredible view from our snow camp. Once we are ready, we will descend through the snow from the Paso Superior to the Laguna de los Tres via the Los Tres Glacier. From here we will return to El Chaltén along the normal route through the Poincenot campsite and passing close to the Laguna Capri.
